Although Chris Wilder’s opening six months in charge of Middlesbrough should be regarded as positive, there was naturally disappointment when his side ran out of steam during the run-in to miss out on the playoffs.
However, there is scope for that setback being a blessing in disguise, Wilder now having the licence to put together his own squad with this season and beyond in mind.
While supporters will have concerns about the proposed sale of Marcus Tavernier to Bournemouth, the funds from that sale and Djed Spence’s transfer to Tottenham Hotspur provide Wilder with the ammunition to put together a more balanced group.
Darragh Lenihan could emerge as a key addition in defence, as could Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers loanees Zack Steffen and Ryan Gilesbetween the sticks and on the left flank respectively.
